Irish Coffee

The only cocktail served warm on purpose.

Hot coffee, Irish whiskey and sugar under a float of unwhipped cream — invented to warm cold transatlantic passengers, perfected ever since.

Ingredients

  • Irish Whiskey50 ml
  • Hot Coffee120 ml
  • Fresh Cream (Chilled)50 ml
  • Sugar1 teaspoon

Garnish

N/A

Method

  1. 1Pour warm black coffee into a preheated Irish coffee glass.
  2. 2Add whiskey and sugar, stir until dissolved.
  3. 3Float thick chilled cream over the back of a spoon so it sits on top.
The lesson

The cream floats because the coffee is sweetened and hot: sugar and temperature change density. Physics is the garnish.
